Chinese Foreign Minister and Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Wang Yi, expressed China’s stance on the first-phase ceasefire and prisoner-exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas during a joint press conference with Swiss Federal Councillor and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in Bellinzona on October 10.
Wang Yi said that China welcomes all efforts aimed at restoring peace and saving lives, describing the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza as “a stain on the conscience of the 21st century.” He urged the awakening of humanity’s moral responsibility and outlined three key appeals from China.
First, joint efforts should be made to achieve a genuine, comprehensive, and lasting ceasefire to effectively alleviate the humanitarian crisis and restore regional stability.
Second, the international community should uphold the consensus that “Palestine should be governed by Palestinians.” Any arrangement concerning Gaza’s future must respect the will of the Palestinian people.
Third, the broader principle of the “two-state solution” must be firmly upheld. Only through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the realization of its legitimate national rights can the root causes of historical injustice and violence be eliminated, paving the way for lasting peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel.
Wang Yi also reaffirmed that China stands ready to work with Switzerland and the broader international community to make continuous efforts toward lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
