Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus sought Canada’s cooperation to recover several billion dollars from Bangladesh.
During a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner to Dhaka in Dhaka on Tuesday (February 7th), he sought help to identify, refrigerate and rescue the assets during a meeting with Canada High Commissioner Ajit Singh in Dhaka.
The chief adviser said, “The elite, close and politicians associated with Sheikh Hasina’s dictatorship have stolen several billion dollars from Bangladesh and a portion of it has been smuggled into Canada in Toronto’s infamous ‘Begampara’ area.”
He also said, “The smugglers have stolen money from the people and bought wealth in Begumpara. Requires your assistance to recover resources. This is our people’s money. ‘
The Canadian High Commissioner praised the interim government’s efforts to bring back the stolen money. He assured Canada’s assistance in response to the effort to restore resources of the chief adviser and said that there was a ‘process’ for refrigeration to recover from the people identified by the Canadian government.
The Canadian ambassador proposed to support the country in the interim government’s reform initiative to overcome democracy. He said, ‘We support the great work you are doing. We appreciate the progress that has been made. We are interested in knowing what we can do. ‘
“Canada is interested in expanding trade with Bangladesh and investing more with Bangladesh.” The ambassador said, “A Canadian minister will visit Bangladesh soon to discuss mutual interest.”
Professor Yunus recalled his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the UN General Assembly in New York. “Canada needs more investment in Dhaka,” he said. Bangladesh is ready for business. We want to increase trade with your country and we want Canadian companies to transfer their factories to Bangladesh. ‘
The chief adviser said, “Many Bangladeshis now live in Canada and study. Therefore, initiatives should be taken to set up a visa office in Otwa Dhaka. ‘
