Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Visits Kyiv on Ukraine’s Independence Day

Amid ongoing international efforts to secure peace between Ukraine and Russia, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day.

Upon landing in the capital, Carney wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that Canada is stepping up its support and efforts toward achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.

Carney was invited to Kyiv as a “special guest.” In a video message after his arrival, he said: “Canada’s support for Ukraine is unwavering. We stand with you every step of the way in defending your sovereignty and in realizing the dreams of your nation.”

His visit comes at a critical moment, as Russian forces recently captured two villages in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine after more than three years of fighting. Following the fading prospects of a Russia-Ukraine summit under U.S. President Donald Trump’s mediation, Carney’s trip is seen as highly significant.

Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for renewed peace talks between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia.
