Canadian Prime Minister Carney to Meet President Trump in Washington

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit the United States once again. On Tuesday (local time), he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington. The visit comes amid growing economic pressure on Canada following recent U.S. tariff policies, and Carney is expected to urge Trump to reduce tariff rates during the meeting.

According to an official statement, this marks Carney’s second visit to the United States since taking office in April. The 60-year-old former banker is expected to focus discussions on revitalizing bilateral relations and enhancing new economic and security cooperation between the two countries.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Monday, “We anticipate that trade will be a key topic during Tuesday’s discussions.”

Analysts note that, unlike other allies in the European Union, Canada has yet to take proactive steps to expand its comprehensive trade agreement with the United States — despite the fact that the U.S. is Canada’s largest trading partner, accounting for nearly 75% of the country’s total exports. Canada’s economy has come under further strain as its GDP contracted by 1.5% in the second quarter of this year.

The Trump administration has already imposed tariffs on lumber, aluminum, steel, and the automobile sector, and President Trump recently announced a 25% tariff on heavy truck imports, set to take effect on November 1.

Currently, trade among the United States, Canada, and Mexico operates under the USMCA (United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement). However, many observers believe that the accord may soon undergo reassessment, given the shifting economic realities.
