Canada to impose tariffs on $21 billion in US goods

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on about $21 billion in US goods on Wednesday in response to US President Donald Trump’s steel and aluminium tariffs.

Trump’s increased tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to the US took effect on Wednesday. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of steel and aluminium to the US.

According to media reports, Canada announced a series of retaliatory measures on Wednesday morning local time, which will take effect on Thursday. These include a 25 per cent tariff on 29.8 billion Canadian dollars ($20.1 billion) worth of US goods.

The report said Canada is also going to target billions of dollars worth of computers, sporting goods and cast iron products imported from the US.

Canadian Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said that Canada could impose non-tariff measures such as restricting oil exports to the US. It could also impose export duties on minerals. Source: NBC News, CNN, Reuters.
