Bangladesh Reaffirms Commitment to Safe, Orderly Migration in Meeting with New IOM Chief

Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), with a renewed emphasis on building a skills-based, rights-based and well-governed migration system.

The commitment was reiterated when the newly appointed Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh, Dr. Laura Nicole Tomm-Bonde, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Monday.

During the meeting, the State Minister underscored Bangladesh’s role as a GCM Champion Country and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing safe, orderly and regular migration through comprehensive policy reforms and stronger governance.

She highlighted the government’s priorities, including skills development for migrant workers, recognition of professional qualifications, ethical recruitment practices, enhanced protection of migrant workers in destination countries, expansion of regular labour mobility pathways, and sustainable reintegration of returning migrants.

The State Minister also commended IOM for its continued technical assistance and cooperation in strengthening Bangladesh’s migration governance framework. She called for enhanced IOM support to help implement the government’s migration agenda and achieve its long-term priorities.

For her part, Dr. Tomm-Bonde praised Bangladesh’s leadership in migration governance and reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with the country. She said the organization would continue to align its support with the government’s vision, priorities and commitments in the migration sector.

Both sides expressed optimism about further strengthening the Bangladesh-IOM partnership to promote effective migration governance and ensure safer, more orderly and regular migration for Bangladeshi migrant workers.
