Sajib Wazed Joy, the eldest son of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said that if the current rulers of the country give up militancy and violence, then the Awami League is ready to negotiate with them.
“We also want a democratic, orderly and secure country. Freedom from militancy. For that we are ready to discuss with everyone. Only if they give up militancy, violence,” he said in a video message broadcast on Wednesday.
On August 5, after Sheikh Hasina resigned in the face of massive protests by students and left for India, Sajib Wazed told the Western media that neither his mother nor his family would be involved in Bangladeshi politics. But in a video message on Wednesday, he urged Awami League leaders and workers to “stand with courage” and said his family is with them.
“All of you take courage, we are here. Bangabandhu’s family did not go anywhere. We are with you. We are ready to do whatever is necessary to protect the country, our leaders and workers and the Awami League,” he said.
