A delegation from the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a leading global humanitarian organization, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir on Thursday (June 18) at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
The IRC delegation was led by Hasina Rahman, Regional Deputy Director for Asia. Other members included Shabira Nupur, Regional Advocacy Specialist and Head of Advocacy and Communications.
During the meeting, Humayun Kabir expressed Bangladesh’s interest in establishing an institutional partnership with the IRC through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and risk management efforts.
He emphasized that enhancing public capacity, increasing awareness, and building resilience at the community level could significantly reduce the loss of lives and livelihoods during disasters.
Both sides underscored the importance of strengthening pre-disaster preparedness, raising public awareness, improving the capacity of local communities to respond to climate-induced disasters and other emergencies, and undertaking joint initiatives to foster sustainable resilience.
The two parties also reaffirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation in support of Bangladesh’s disaster management priorities and further strengthening the country’s capacity to address future risks and challenges.
Participants expressed hope that the cordial meeting would pave the way for new areas of cooperation between Bangladesh and the International Rescue Committee.
