U.S. President Donald Trump has announced additional tariffs on several European countries, including the United Kingdom and Denmark, until any agreement on the purchase of Greenland is finalized. He issued this warning just moments ago via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
In his post, Trump stated that all goods exported to the United States from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would be subject to new tariffs. According to the announcement, a 10% tariff will take effect on February 1, 2026, and this rate will increase to 25% starting June 1, 2026.
Trump made it clear that these tariffs will remain in place “until a complete and final purchase” of Greenland is concluded.
Reason Behind the Decision:
At the beginning of his post, Trump asserted, “It is time for Denmark to return Greenland—because world peace is at risk.” He added that China and Russia are increasingly eyeing Greenland, and in such a scenario, no country other than the United States can play an effective role.
According to Trump, this is not merely a territorial issue but a matter directly tied to global security and future survival. He accused the European countries involved of creating a precarious situation that is neither sustainable nor acceptable in the long term.
He emphasized that “tough decisions” are necessary to protect world peace and security.
On Defense Measures:
In his announcement, Trump also mentioned the U.S.’s so-called “Golden Dome” defense system. He claimed that unless Greenland comes under U.S. control, the system cannot operate at its highest efficiency and effectiveness.
Analysts suggest that Trump’s announcement could further strain commercial and diplomatic relations between the United States and European nations. Greenland has already been a subject of international debate, and this threat of tariffs may escalate tensions even further.
