At Least 10 Killed in Passenger Bus Crash in Eastern Mexico

At least 10 people were killed and 32 others injured in a passenger bus crash in eastern Mexico, local authorities in Veracruz state confirmed on Thursday.

According to AFP, the accident occurred on Christmas Eve in the town of Zontecomatlán. The bus was travelling from Mexico City to the village of Chicontepec in Veracruz when it reportedly lost control and crashed, officials said.

In a statement, the Zontecomatlán mayor’s office said that the victims included nine adults and one child. The 32 injured passengers were taken to several hospitals for treatment. Municipal authorities also released a list of the injured along with the hospitals where they are receiving care.

Road accidents have increased in Mexico in recent years, with crashes involving buses and trucks occurring frequently. Authorities say excessive speed and mechanical failures are among the main causes of such accidents.

In a similar incident in late November, a bus crash in the western state of Michoacán left 10 people dead and at least 20 others injured.
