World Leaders Gather in Brazil for UN COP30 Climate Summit

World leaders are gathering this week in Belém, in Brazil’s Amazon region, for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) — a two-week summit bringing together all signatories of the 1992 UN Climate Convention.

The core message of this year’s summit is “action over promises” — focusing on implementing previous commitments, particularly the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels pledged at COP28.

Another key theme will be the protection of global forests, especially the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous communities who depend on it. Belém, known as the “Gateway to the Amazon,” was chosen as host to highlight the symbolic and ecological importance of the world’s largest rainforest.

The Amazon is home to more than 400 indigenous groups, representing nearly 10 percent of the region’s population, many of whom face growing threats from deforestation, mining, and industrial agriculture.

Experts say COP30 will likely mark the first acknowledgment that the world has failed to stay within the 1.5°C global warming limit.

The first week will focus on national priorities and new financing commitments, while ministers and negotiators will join the second week to finalize agreements. Analysts note that as the U.S. retreats from climate leadership, China and Brazil are increasingly stepping up.
