The United Kingdom has warned Israel against taking retaliatory actions after recognizing the State of Palestine. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that she had explicitly cautioned Israel not to use London’s decision as a pretext to seize additional parts of the West Bank.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of attending a United Nations conference in New York on Monday, September 22, Cooper noted that several other European countries, including France, may also announce recognition of Palestine at the event.
On Sunday, the UK formally recognized Palestine as a state, marking a major shift in its foreign policy. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made the announcement, coinciding with similar recognitions by Canada, Australia, and Portugal.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly criticized the move, describing it as rewarding terrorism. He stated that a Palestinian state “will never be established.”
Responding to BBC questions, Cooper expressed concern that Israel might use the recognition as justification to expand its control over the West Bank. However, she said she had made it clear to Israel’s Foreign Minister that such actions would be “unacceptable.”
Cooper emphasized, “Just as we recognize Israel’s security, it is equally important to acknowledge the Palestinian people’s right to their own state. This decision is intended to promote peace, justice, and security in the Middle East.”
The UK Foreign Office added that Cooper will stress international consensus on a framework for sustainable peace in the Middle East during the UN conference.
At the time of the announcement, Prime Minister Starmer said the recognition aims to renew hope in the peace process and advance a two-state solution. Meanwhile, Israeli government spokesperson David Menser criticized the UK Labour Party, saying, “The Jewish community worldwide will never forgive this betrayal.”
