A large pro-Palestinian demonstration was held in Auckland, New Zealand, showing solidarity with Gaza. Organizers described it as the largest gathering since the outbreak of the conflict. While participants on Saturday were estimated by organizers at around 50,000, police put the number closer to 20,000.
Arama Rata, spokesperson for Aotearoa for Palestine, said this was the biggest solidarity march since the escalation of violence in Gaza. Participants carried Palestinian flags and banners, chanting slogans such as “Don’t normalize genocide” and “Stand with Palestine.”
According to Palestinian authorities, at least 64,000 people have died in the Gaza conflict as of the latest reports. Human rights organizations have also warned of a looming famine in Gaza due to food shortages.
During the march, organizers attempted to close a key city bridge, but strong winds prevented the action. Police confirmed that no arrests were made. Organizers aimed to pressure the New Zealand government to impose sanctions on Israel.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described the situation in Gaza as “dire”, though no final decision has yet been made regarding whether New Zealand will recognize a Palestinian state.
