Robert Tarjan Impressed by China’s Science-Driven Strategy

Turing Award-winning scientist Robert Tarjan recently spoke in an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG) about the role of fundamental scientific research in innovation, as well as opportunities for exchange and cooperation with China.

On July 13 this year, Tarjan was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Basic Science at the International Conference on Basic Sciences held in Beijing. At 38, he is the youngest recipient of this prestigious recognition.

In his interview with CMG, Tarjan noted that the core theme of the Beijing conference was sharing research methodologies. These exchanges, he emphasized, are not limited to specific disciplines but foster rich interdisciplinary dialogue. The event offered a unique platform for mathematicians, physicists, and computer scientists to engage in meaningful idea-sharing, with tremendous potential. Scientific research is increasingly moving toward cross-disciplinary integration, and this conference was a vivid reflection of that trend.

Acknowledging China’s rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, Tarjan said China is not only taking a leading role in AI but also playing a positive and active role across the entire field of fundamental science. “China’s long-term strategic commitment to the development of basic science is truly commendable,” he remarked. “The achievements China has made so far are remarkable, and I look forward with great anticipation to witnessing further progress in the future.”

Speaking about China’s core advantages in accelerating AI development, Tarjan highlighted several key strengths: sustained strategic support from the government, a robust STEM education system, and a large number of students who are genuinely enthusiastic about cutting-edge technologies.

President Xi Jinping has set a national goal for China to become a global powerhouse in science and technology by 2035. In this context, Tarjan expressed his sincere hope that fundamental science will play a pivotal and meaningful role in achieving that vision.

Professor Tarjan concluded by saying he is deeply impressed by China’s science-focused national strategy and the country’s strong emphasis on foundational research. He hopes the values of scientific inquiry—using knowledge for the benefit of society, sharing generously, remaining open, and being willing to collaborate—will be passed on to future generations. In the world of science, he said, collaboration among people, disciplines, and nations is especially valuable.
