Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that Israel is violating everything, including international law, in its actions in Gaza.
“In Gaza, Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid is a violation of humanity, morality, and international law,” he said.
In an interview with national broadcaster ABC, Albanese remarked, “Everyone can see that Israel’s decision in March to cut off the flow of food was clearly a breach of international law. It’s also a disgrace to human decency.”
He further stated, “Blocking the delivery of food and aid to the people of Gaza is unacceptable — not only from a legal standpoint but also from a moral perspective.”
On the question of whether Australia would recognize a Palestinian state, as France has done, Albanese said his government is not making any “immediate” decisions on the matter.
“We will recognize a Palestinian state if and when the necessary conditions are met,” he said. “But the question is — how do you exclude Hamas from that process?”
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas recently said it is willing to hand over governance of Gaza to an internationally supported interim government if a permanent ceasefire is achieved. However, it has made clear: “As long as Israeli occupation continues, we will not lay down our arms.”
