Solar Power Becomes the Largest Single Source of Energy in the EU for the First Time

In June 2025, solar power emerged as the largest single source of electricity generation in the European Union (EU) for the first time. This information was reported on Thursday (July 10) by the French news agency AFP, citing a fuel think tank based in Paris.

The British-based Ember Group, which researches clean energy transitions, stated that solar panels accounted for 22.1% of Europe’s electricity production in June. This figure surpassed nuclear power at 21.8% and wind turbines at 15.8%. Meanwhile, gas contributed 14.4% and hydropower 12.8%.

According to Ember’s report, at least 13 countries broke their national records for solar energy production. Europe also set a new record for wind power generation. Additionally, coal’s share of electricity production in Europe has fallen to its lowest level ever recorded.

However, due to rising electricity demand, coal usage in the first half of 2025 was still higher compared to the same period in 2024. Electricity demand in the first six months increased by more than 2% compared to last year.
