India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has said that Bangladesh and India can overcome any challenge if they work together, adding that the two neighbours could emerge as a powerful democratic alliance and an influential force on the global stage.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the historic Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata on Thursday, Trivedi said he was looking forward to his new assignment in Bangladesh with great enthusiasm. He also expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the responsibility.
Trivedi is set to replace incumbent Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Kumar Verma, who has been appointed India’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
Only a handful of Indian politicians have transitioned directly into diplomatic roles, and Trivedi is among those rare examples. A former Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health, he has previously been associated with the Trinamool Congress and later with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He is assuming office at a time when Dhaka and New Delhi continue to face several challenges, including issues related to border management, trade, visa services, and the sharing of transboundary river waters.
According to analysts, Trivedi’s familiarity with West Bengal politics and his close connection to the Bengali language and culture could contribute positively to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
