Deadly Violence in DR Congo: Dozens Killed as Village Torched in Ituri

An armed attack in the northeastern Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed multiple lives. Authorities have confirmed that at least 43 people were killed in an assault on a village in the Mambasa territory on Thursday, local time.

According to official sources, the attackers set fire to large parts of the village, destroying numerous homes and leaving widespread devastation in their wake. The assault has been attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group that has been active in the region for years.

Local officials reported that rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, and the situation remains volatile. The death toll is feared to rise as search efforts continue. Several individuals are also reported missing, raising concerns that some may have been abducted.

Analysts note that the security situation in eastern Congo has long been fragile. The presence of multiple armed groups, including the M23, has further complicated the conflict landscape. Since 2020, the ADF has been held responsible for a significant number of attacks targeting civilians.

Despite ongoing joint military operations, achieving lasting peace in the region remains a formidable challenge, observers say.
