Islamophobia Contradicts the UN Charter, Says Chinese Representative

China has called on the international community to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward Islamophobia. The appeal was made by Sun Lei, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on Monday, March 16.

In his address, Sun Lei stressed that all countries should firmly oppose extremist ideologies and the notion of a “clash of civilizations.” He urged governments to prohibit the incitement of hatred and intolerance based on religion or belief, promote a culture of peace, and work collectively to build inclusive societies.

Sun further noted that Islamophobia runs directly counter to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. He warned that such prejudice undermines the shared values of humanity, poses a threat to peace and development, and seriously obstructs international efforts to strengthen solidarity and cooperation.

He also pointed out that prejudice, discrimination and violence against Muslims are rising in many parts of the world. According to him, Islamophobia is closely linked to regional conflicts, social inequality and the misuse of digital technologies, creating a major challenge for the international community in taking effective action.

Emphasizing the need for collective efforts, Sun said the international community must work together to promote lasting peace, strengthen solidarity and mutual trust, and resolve conflicts and differences through dialogue and consultation. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of advancing shared development and revitalization so that people everywhere can benefit from economic progress and the latest technological achievements.

He concluded by underscoring the need to address the root causes of discrimination and intolerance—particularly poverty and inequality. Encouraging dialogue among civilizations, he said, would foster inclusive coexistence and mutual learning among different nations, cultures and religions, strengthen bonds among peoples, and help remove barriers and misunderstandings.
