China Rejects U.S. Remarks on Hong Kong

China has strongly rejected recent remarks by the United States regarding Hong Kong. Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Friday (March 13), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed firm opposition to Washington’s comments on the issue.

Guo said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) enforces laws that penalize crimes endangering national security in accordance with legal procedures, and the central government firmly supports these measures. He emphasized that no external force has the right to interfere in Hong Kong’s judicial system or in China’s internal affairs.

According to recent reports citing a source within the U.S. government, the Trump administration reportedly hopes that China may release media tycoon Jimmy Lai on humanitarian grounds. In return, the United States is said to be considering easing some sanctions imposed on China over Hong Kong-related issues.

Responding to the report, Guo stated that Jimmy Lai is a key organizer and participant in a series of anti-China and disruptive activities in Hong Kong. His actions, the spokesperson said, have seriously undermined the fundamental principle of “One Country, Two Systems,” severely endangered national security, and significantly harmed Hong Kong’s prosperity, stability, and the safety of its residents. He stressed that such actions must be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.

Guo further noted that Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law, and anyone involved in serious illegal or criminal activities must be held accountable under the legal framework.
