A meeting was held in London, UK, between the interim government’s chief advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
In the meeting, Muhammad Yunus said that if all preparations are completed, national elections can be held even in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026. This information was given in a joint statement posted on the chief advisor’s official Facebook page after the meeting.
The meeting began at 9 am local time (2 pm Bangladesh time) on Friday at the Dorchester Hotel in London, UK. The statement said that Tarique Rahman proposed to the chief advisor to hold elections before Ramadan next year. The party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia also thinks it would be better if the elections were held at that time.
The statement said, “The chief advisor said that he has announced that the elections will be held in the first half of April next year.” “If all preparations are complete, elections could be held in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026. In that case, sufficient progress on reforms and justice will need to be achieved by that time.”
