Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Russia to participate in a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory in World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Xi to the Kremlin on Thursday (May 8), Reuters reported.
This bilateral meeting could be a diplomatic effort by Russia to turn the tide of the Ukraine war.
China, which is in a global trade dispute with the United States, is expected to sign many agreements during this visit to deepen the ‘boundless strategic partnership’ signed with Russia in 2022. It is worth noting that Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine within three weeks of that agreement.
China is currently Russia’s largest trading partner. China has built a strong economic position for Russia in the face of Western sanctions. China is the largest buyer of Russian oil and gas.
In addition to Xi Jinping, several other heads of state will travel to Moscow to attend this week’s military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies over Nazi Germany in World War II.
