Moscow has said that the threat of a military strike against Russia’s ally Iran is unacceptable. At the same time, Russia has warned that bombing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear facilities could lead to potentially catastrophic consequences.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova gave this warning while talking to reporters on Thursday.
Earlier, last Sunday, US President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iran if Tehran does not reach an agreement with Washington on its nuclear program. Following this threat, the US has deployed additional fighter jets to the region.
When asked about Iran’s nuclear program and the dangers of the current situation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow is committed to finding a solution to Iran’s nuclear program. Russia respects Tehran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy.
“The use of military force by Iran’s opponents in connection with its nuclear program is illegal and unacceptable,” ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow.
“The threat of bombing Iran’s nuclear infrastructure from outside will inevitably lead to an irreversible global catastrophe. These threats are absolutely unacceptable.”
Western powers have accused Iran of pursuing a secret agenda to develop a nuclear weapons capability through its high stockpile of enriched uranium. Tehran, however, has consistently denied the allegations, saying it is only working on a civilian nuclear energy program.
