22 September :New US sanctions targeting all Iranian airlines are set to take effect on Tuesday, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who made the announcement on Monday, 21 September.
Under the new sanctions, Iranian airlines will lose access to international airspace. Around two weeks earlier, the US Treasury Department had already added 27 Iranian airlines to its sanctions list.
Bessent also said the United States had held discussions with China over the new sanctions against Iran. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States within the next two days. According to a BBC report, the sanctions imposed on Iran could be discussed during his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Earlier in September, the United States announced plans to further isolate Iran economically. The plan included measures targeting the country’s banking and trade sectors, as well as technology, aviation and maritime transport.
