US airstrike kills 6 in Yemen

The United States has been accused of carrying out airstrikes in southern Yemen. Five al-Qaeda members were killed in the attack. Two Yemeni security sources told AFP on Saturday (May 24).

A security source in Abyan province said residents of the area had confirmed the US airstrike. They said five al-Qaeda members were killed in the attack. The incident took place in the border region of Aden, where the internationally recognized government is located.

The second source said the US carried out the attack on Friday afternoon north of the town of Khabar al-Marrakesh. The five were killed. The area is surrounded by mountains and is used by al-Qaeda.

The second source added that the identities of the victims were not known. It is believed that a local al-Qaeda leader was also killed in the attack.

Washington once considered al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to be the most dangerous branch of the armed network.
