Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive posture over Greenland has sparked a fresh and serious crisis within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In response to the growing uncertainty, several European countries have expressed solidarity with Denmark and decided to reinforce a limited military presence in Greenland.
Following Trump’s public threats to bring Greenland under U.S. control, countries including Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway announced their support for Denmark. These nations are dispatching small military contingents to participate in joint exercises with the Danish armed forces, aimed at strengthening security in Greenland.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Danish government said that military presence in Greenland is being expanded in coordination with NATO allies. Germany’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that an initial 13-member reconnaissance team would be deployed, while French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the first unit of French troops had already begun its journey to Greenland.
Meanwhile, Trump has reiterated on his social media platform that taking control of Greenland is “essential” to U.S. national security. The White House has not ruled out the use of force if deemed necessary. This uncompromising stance has raised serious questions about NATO’s unity and long-term credibility.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a strong warning, stating that any attempt by an ally to seize the territory of another member state would fundamentally undermine NATO’s very existence. Although meetings have taken place in Washington between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President J.D. Vance, and representatives from Denmark and Greenland, positions on sovereignty remain sharply divided.
Amid the escalating geopolitical tensions, Canada and France have also announced plans to open new consulates in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, in the coming weeks. Analysts suggest that this move will further intensify diplomatic engagement and international attention on the strategically sensitive Arctic region.
