Trump Cancels All Trade Talks with Canada Amid Escalating Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the immediate cancellation of all ongoing trade discussions with Canada. The decision was made public on Wednesday through a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.

According to a report by the BBC, Trump claimed that Canada recently released an advertisement quoting former U.S. President Ronald Reagan in a way that portrayed U.S. tariff policies negatively.

In his post, Trump wrote, “In response to Canada’s disgraceful behavior, we are terminating all trade talks with them.”

Earlier, the Trump administration had imposed a 35% tariff on Canadian imports, while maintaining certain exemptions for goods covered under the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The USMCA, signed during Trump’s first term, is a free trade pact between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, designed to modernize and replace the former NAFTA agreement.

The report further noted that the President has also introduced sector-specific tariffs on select Canadian goods, including 50% on metals and 25% on automobile imports.
