Switzerland has declared five days of national mourning, beginning on Thursday, to honor the victims of a devastating explosion and fire that tore through the ‘La Constellation’ bar in Crans-Montana, located in the southwestern part of the country.
The explosion, which occurred shortly after 1:30 AM local time on Wednesday, spread flames throughout the building, claiming at least 40 lives and injuring over a hundred people, according to reports.
In tribute to the victims, the Swiss government has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast on government buildings across the country. Outside the bar, which remains cordoned off, locals and family members have spontaneously organized vigils and prayer sessions. People are paying their respects by placing flowers and lighting candles in memory of those who perished.
A special prayer service was held at the Montana Station Church to mark the New Year, with hundreds of people attending to mourn the tragedy. In light of the sorrowful event, President Guy Parmelin canceled his New Year’s address to the nation.
Authorities have indicated that it may take several more days to assist the families of the victims, identify the deceased, and continue treatment for the injured.
