September 10, 2026 : Oscar-winning US actress Susan Sarandon says she continues to face professional setbacks and discrimination in Hollywood because of her outspoken support for Palestine.
The 79-year-old actress made the comments while speaking to journalists at the Venice International Film Festival in Italy, where she is promoting her latest film, The Echo Chamber.
Sarandon said public attitudes around the world have shifted positively regarding the historical realities of Palestine and US political and financial support for Israel. However, she said that change has yet to be reflected at major institutions within Hollywood.
She alleged that several influential Hollywood talent agencies still informally advise producers against casting her in films. According to Sarandon, major studios remain reluctant to work with artists who publicly support Palestine or speak out against Israeli military actions.
She said the situation has resulted in her losing opportunities to work on several films in recent years. Despite the professional difficulties, Sarandon said she was encouraged by the warm support she has received from ordinary people in different parts of the world.
Sarandon also expressed gratitude to director Andrea Pallauro for giving her the opportunity to appear in The Echo Chamber. Based on the final screenplay by renowned Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, the film features Sarandon as an elderly singer. It is among the 21 films competing for the Venice Film Festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion.
In 2023, United Talent Agency (UTA), one of Hollywood’s leading talent management companies, terminated its long-standing agreement with Sarandon after she spoke at a pro-Palestinian rally following the start of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
The ongoing situation in Palestine has also featured prominently at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Several films at the festival portray Palestinians’ struggle to preserve their existence and identity.
However, festival artistic director Alberto Barbera said the Palestinian flag could not be flown at the festival venue because the Italian government has yet to formally recognize a Palestinian state.
