Strong earthquake in Iran

A strong earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale was felt in Iran’s Semnan province. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Meher News reported.

According to the Iranian Seismological Organization, the earthquake occurred at 8:53 am local time on Thursday at a depth of 9 kilometers in the Zamanabad area of ​​Semnan province.

It is known that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a longitude of 57.19 degrees and a latitude of 35.25 degrees.

Iran is basically an earthquake-prone region. Because the country is located at the junction of two major tectonic plates – the Arabian plate and the Eurasian plate. These two plates are now moving towards each other. As a result, major earthquakes often occur in the region.

On average, 10,000 small to medium-sized earthquakes occur in Iran every year. Some of these earthquakes are very destructive. For example, the 6.6 magnitude earthquake in 2003 killed about 26,000 people.
