24 September :Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has openly and unequivocally described Israel’s military operation in the besieged Gaza Strip as “genocide” and strongly condemned the campaign.
He made the remarks in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, 23 September.
Sanchez said Spain unequivocally condemned what he described as the “brutal genocide” that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was continuing to carry out in Gaza.
Addressing the General Assembly, the Spanish prime minister made clear that Spain had opposed all forms of aggressive warfare over the past eight years.
He said Spain had consistently opposed war regardless of where aggression took place—whether in Ukraine, Lebanon or Iran. “We have refused to increase military spending and have done everything possible to prevent any attack that violates the UN Charter,” he said.
Sanchez also said his government remained committed to maintaining sanctions against Russia and imposing a comprehensive arms embargo on Netanyahu’s government in Israel. At the same time, he reaffirmed Spain’s firm position against allowing its territory to be used for any form of aggression carried out in violation of international law.
