At least 30 people have lost their lives in the last two days due to heavy rains, floods and landslides in the northeastern region of India. Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and North Sikkim have been the worst affected. It is feared that the death toll may rise further as the rains and landslides continue. On Saturday, a sudden landslide in Arunachal Pradesh swept away a moving car and fell into a deep gorge. 9 people, including seven members of the same family, died there. Two more people died in a landslide in Cabbage Garden and Pine Grove in Zero area of Arunachal.
At least 60,000 people in 12 districts of Assam have been affected by the rains. Flooding has occurred in some areas. The local administration has issued an ‘orange alert’ in Assam and a ‘yellow alert’ is in other states of the northeastern region.
On Saturday alone, 14 people died in different parts of the northeast. Tourists are stranded in many places. Many important road links have been cut off due to landslides and waterlogging.
According to the Meteorological Department, Guwahati recorded 111 mm of rain on Saturday, breaking the record of the last 67 years. The same night, heavy rains also occurred in North Sikkim. The administration has banned tourists from going there due to the fear of accidents.
