The European Union (EU) officially imposed new sanctions on Tuesday, targeting Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ oil tankers. At the same time, it also threatened more punishment for Moscow for not agreeing to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The French news agency AFP reported this news in a report.
AFP reported from Brussels that the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaza Kalas Ex- wrote, ‘The EU has approved its 17th round of sanctions against Russia. The sanctions cover about 200 shadow fleet ships.’
He also said, ‘More sanctions on Russia are underway. The longer Russia continues the war, the tougher our response will be.’
The latest sanctions against the Kremlin have been in the pipeline for weeks and EU countries have already approved them last week.
Brussels has already tabled a new round of sanctions after leaders threatened Moscow with “comprehensive sanctions” for backing down on a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The 17th package included the blacklisting of nearly 200 tankers from Russia’s “shadow fleet” in a bid to reduce Moscow’s ability to export oil. It also included asset freezes and visa bans on dozens of Russian officials.
The EU also took further action against Russia over alleged “hybrid attacks” on the bloc.
