Nearly 1,500 Deaths in Spain Over 16 Days Due to Heatwave

Spain continues to face rising fatalities amid a prolonged heatwave. According to the Carlos III Health Institute, 1,149 excess deaths occurred between August 3 and 18. The institute suggests that extreme heat may be the primary cause of these deaths.

The institute analyzed data from its National Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo), which determines excess deaths by comparing current mortality with historical averages. Data from Spain’s National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other factors were also considered.

In July, heat-related deaths in the country reached 1,060, marking a 57 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Experts note that rising global temperatures are causing more frequent heatwaves across Europe, directly impacting public health.

Although European countries have implemented precautionary measures to combat heatwaves, public health specialists have expressed concern over the alarming rise in fatalities.
