A military transport aircraft crashed in Colombia’s Putumayo region on Monday morning, resulting in significant casualties. The plane took off from La Tagua Air Base and lost control shortly after departure, crashing into the nearby jungle.
The aircraft was carrying over a hundred military personnel from three platoons. At least 90 fatalities have been reported so far, though the final number has not been confirmed. Several of the injured are in critical condition.
Rescue operations have been hampered by the remote location. Local residents are assisting in the efforts, transporting the wounded to nearby towns using motorcycles and other vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the plane began exhibiting unusual behavior shortly after takeoff before crashing to the ground with a loud impact, instantly igniting fires in the surrounding area. Analysts note that high humidity and adverse weather may have affected the plane’s performance, while mechanical failure cannot be ruled out.
The downed C-130 Hercules is widely regarded as a reliable military transport aircraft, but operations in remote areas carry inherent risks.
Defense Minister Sanchez urged the public to avoid spreading rumors and assured that the true cause of the crash would be revealed once the investigation concludes.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief across the nation, with many paying tribute to the fallen soldiers.
