Mark Carney’s party, a fierce critic of Trump, wins Canadian election

The Liberal Party, a fierce critic of US President Donald Trump, won the Canadian national election. With this, the Liberal Party is going to sit in power in Canada for the fourth consecutive time.

However, the party will not be able to form a single government. A coalition government will have to be formed.

To get a single majority in Canada’s 343-seat House of Commons, it is necessary to win 172 seats. Of these, the Liberal Party won 168 seats. The Conservative Party won 144 seats. The Bloc Québécois won 23 seats. The NDP won 7 seats. And the Green Party won one seat.

Announcing his party’s victory in the national election, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that his country will never surrender to the United States.

Late Tuesday night local time, Liberal Party leader Carney said, “I have been warning for months about what the United States wants to take away our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not just idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us up so that the United States can buy us. That will never happen.”

Prime Minister Carney has promised to be a leader for all those who consider Canada their home.

Since US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada and expressed his desire to make the country the 51st state of the United States, relations between the two allied neighbors have been strained.

Trump’s statement also caused a strong reaction among ordinary Canadian citizens. It created a strong patriotic tide among them. This completely changed the electoral atmosphere in Canada in the run-up to the vote. Trump’s statements and his actions became the main topic of discussion in Canada before the vote.

Carney had promised to bring about a major change in Canada’s relationship with the United States during his election campaign due to Trump’s statements. This boosted public support for Liberal Party Prime Ministerial candidate Carney, which was reflected on election day.

On Tuesday, Carney said, “We have overcome the shock of the US betrayal. But we should never forget the lessons we have learned from it. We need to look after ourselves. Above all, we need to look after each other.” Source: CNN, BBC
