Workers’ unions, faculty, and students affiliated with the University of California have filed a lawsuit against the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The case was lodged on Tuesday in the Northern District Court of California.
According to a report by Reuters, the lawsuit alleges that the Trump administration suspended federal funding to the university and took other actions with the intent of undermining academic freedom.
The plaintiffs argue that the lawsuit aims to prevent the government from using economic threats against the University of California. They contend such threats are harmful, unlawful, and designed to punish the institution. Another goal of the case is to secure the release of already suspended funds.
The coalition of unions, faculty, and students behind the lawsuit further claims that the Trump administration is attempting to implement a plan that intimidates colleges and universities. These threats, they say, are rooted in disregard for academic curricula, freedom of expression, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
The White House has not immediately commented on the case.
