Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed that Italy will not participate in any military operation against Iran, underscoring Rome’s commitment to staying out of the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Ankara on Wednesday, Meloni said Italy’s position has remained consistent since the crisis began.
“Our position has been very clear since the conflict involving Iran started. We will not take part in any attack against Iran,” she said.
Meloni’s remarks come as regional tensions continue to intensify, prompting growing international concern over the risk of a broader conflict.
Italy had previously signaled its intention to avoid direct military involvement in the crisis. In March this year, Rome reportedly denied permission for U.S. military aircraft bound for the Middle East to land at the Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, a move widely seen as reinforcing its policy of non-participation in military operations related to the conflict.
The Italian government has consistently advocated diplomatic efforts and restraint as the preferred path to addressing the growing instability in the region.
