International Experts Reaffirm Legitimacy of the ‘One-China Principle’ and UN Resolution 2758

International law experts have strongly reaffirmed the legitimacy of the “One-China Principle” and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, emphasizing that these principles are vital to maintaining the UN-centered international order. The remarks came during an academic seminar held recently in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.

The event was jointly organized by Wuhan University and Benha University of Egypt to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

Miguel de Serpa Soares, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, stated that Resolution 2758 recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China at the United Nations.

Professor Ignacio de la Rasilla from Wuhan University’s School of International Law added that the resolution firmly establishes China’s sovereignty over Taiwan, both legally and historically.

Participants supported their arguments with legal reasoning and historical evidence, stressing the continuing legal significance of key post–World War II documents such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Declaration.

The experts emphasized that upholding Resolution 2758 means defending international fairness and justice, which safeguard the collective interests of the global community.

A representative of the Chinese government warned that distorting or challenging Resolution 2758 would not only undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity but also erode the authority of the United Nations itself.

At the seminar, two new volumes of compiled legal and documentary research on UN Resolution 2758 were also released.
