Human Rights Watch’s message to the interim government US-based human rights organization Human Rights Watch commented that the interim government to be formed after the resignation of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should prioritize justice, accountability, and democratic transition.

In a statement on Tuesday, August 6, Meenakshi Ganguly, the organization’s deputy director for Asia, said that Sheikh Hasina’s resignation after nearly 15 years of increasing authoritarianism has given Bangladesh hope for “accountability and democratic reform.”

“The interim government should use this opportunity to restructure the rule of law in conjunction with independent institutions to ensure justice for victims.
