Despite repeated threats from US President Donald Trump to take control of Greenland, the island’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has firmly reiterated his government’s commitment to remain aligned with Denmark. He made it clear that if Greenland were forced to choose between the United States and Denmark, it would unequivocally stand with Denmark.
Nielsen made the remarks on Tuesday at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. “If we are asked right now to choose between the United States and Denmark, we will choose Denmark,” he said, leaving no room for ambiguity.
The Greenlandic prime minister further emphasised that his country has aligned itself with Denmark, NATO and the European Union, stressing that peaceful dialogue and cooperation remain Greenland’s primary objectives. His comments reflected a clear vote of confidence in Europe and Greenland’s long-standing strategic partners, in contrast to mounting pressure from Washington.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the gravity of the situation, saying, “Facing such pressure from our closest ally is by no means easy.” She suggested that overt threats from a country traditionally regarded as a close partner were diplomatically uncomfortable and deeply concerning.
It may be recalled that the Greenland government had previously rejected Trump’s threats in an official statement issued on Monday, asserting that there would be no compromise on the island’s sovereignty or its right to make independent political decisions.
During his first term in office, Trump had floated the idea of acquiring Greenland. Since taking office for a second term, and particularly in recent weeks, he has renewed his interest in the strategically located Arctic island. He has even gone so far as to publicly state that the United States would take control of Greenland “one way or another.”
Trump’s remarks have reignited geopolitical tensions on the international stage, raising questions about NATO unity and its future direction. They have also stirred deep concern among Greenlanders over security, national identity and the island’s long-term political trajectory.
Analysts believe that the autonomous Greenland government’s unequivocal stance in the face of US pressure amounts to a strong and symbolic rebuff to Washington.
