Ghana Flood Death Toll Rises to 34, Nearly 90,000 Displaced

The death toll from severe flooding across Ghana this week has risen to 34, according to officials, while rescue operations continue amid fears that the number may increase further. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has confirmed that emergency relief efforts are ongoing in affected areas.

According to local media outlet 3News, NADMO’s Director of Inspections, Richard Amo Yartey, said that out of the 34 confirmed fatalities so far, 12 deaths were recorded in the capital, Accra. He added that information on additional casualties from other regions is still being collected and verified.

He also noted that several people remain missing, and search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate them. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise further as more bodies may be recovered during ongoing operations.

In an interview with TV3 on Thursday, Amo Yartey said that alongside rescue operations, food, clean water, and essential relief supplies are being delivered to flood-affected communities. Government agencies are working in coordination to ensure urgent humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.

Latest data from NADMO indicates that seven regions across Ghana have been affected by the flooding. A total of 89,736 people have been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in safer areas.

The Greater Accra Region has been the worst affected, with 54,712 people displaced. It is followed by the Central Region, where 21,882 residents have been impacted by the disaster.

Other affected regions include Volta, Western, Ashanti, and Western North, where thousands more have also been displaced. The Eastern Region has reported comparatively lower displacement figures, though authorities confirmed that it has not been spared from the impact of the floods.

Officials said a full assessment of the damage is still underway. Rescue and relief operations will continue until floodwaters recede, with authorities closely monitoring the evolving situation.
