Germany Signals Growth in High-Tech Cooperation With China

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent two-day visit to China proved highly productive—featuring the signing of cooperation documents in sectors ranging from green transformation to media, deep talks with Chinese enterprises, and even witnessing humanoid robots perform Kung Fu at China’s Spring Festival Gala. The visit has raised a key question among German companies operating in China: What signals does this trip send for the future of bilateral cooperation?

Oliver Ohme, Executive Director of the German Chamber of Commerce for Northern and Northeastern China, said the size, seniority, and industrial diversity of the German business delegation accompanying the Chancellor clearly reflect a positive outlook for the China–Germany business ecosystem.

“We believe the future of bilateral business cooperation will be driven primarily by emerging and advanced technologies—such as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and smart manufacturing,” Ohme said.

BMW Group Chairman Oliver Zipse echoed this optimism:
“I feel very fortunate to join this visit to China for the first time. China is the world’s largest automotive market and one of the most important powerhouses of innovation in our industry. This trip strongly signals expanded dialogue, deeper cooperation, mutual trust, and truly win–win partnerships.”
