Fresh tensions have surfaced over Lebanon following renewed criticism by Iran regarding the continued presence of Israeli forces on Lebanese territory.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Israel’s continued military presence in Lebanon runs counter to the spirit of the memorandum of understanding reached with the United States.
Araghchi argued that the crises involving Iran and Lebanon are interconnected, adding that progress in resolving one issue could have implications for the other. He also stressed that any future attacks against Lebanon would be unacceptable.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli troops would continue to remain in areas near the Lebanese border due to security considerations. He reiterated a similar position regarding Israel’s military posture in Syria.
According to Netanyahu, troop deployments will remain in place until security concerns are fully addressed. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has already resulted in significant casualties, and the situation has yet to return to normal.
Analysts believe that despite recent diplomatic understandings between the United States and Iran, differences over Lebanon could pose new challenges for Middle East diplomacy.
