The death toll from severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall and flash floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam has continued to rise, reaching 41, after 10 more fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours. More than 700,000 people have been affected by the disaster, while at least three people remain missing.
The latest figures were reported on Thursday (July 23), citing the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), according to Anadolu Agency.
Authorities said the newly reported deaths occurred across several areas in five districts of the state. Rescue teams are continuing search operations for the missing individuals, while local administrations are working to deliver emergency assistance to flood-affected communities.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that cloudbursts were among the major causes behind the latest disaster. He noted that several districts that had not previously experienced major flooding were also severely impacted this time, resulting in widespread damage to public life, transportation networks, and local infrastructure.
The Chief Minister’s Office said all relevant government departments have been instructed to ensure the swift delivery of relief supplies to every affected family. Officials have also been directed to remain active on the ground and continue rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts until the situation returns to normal.
The administration said all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of affected residents. Various government agencies are working in coordination to manage the crisis, assess the extent of damage, and prepare plans for rehabilitation and recovery.
