September 10, 2026 :Finland has completed construction of a 200-kilometre security fence along its border with Russia, further strengthening security along NATO’s longest frontier with Moscow amid growing tensions and concerns over border security.
According to a report by Euronews, the new barrier covers part of Finland’s 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, with a significant portion of the fence located in the country’s southeastern region.
Finland’s security environment changed significantly following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. After maintaining a policy of military non-alignment for decades, Helsinki joined NATO in April 2023.
Later that year, more than 1,300 undocumented migrants attempted to enter Finland through the Russian border. Finnish authorities accused Russia of conducting a form of “hybrid warfare” by facilitating the movement of third-country nationals toward the border. The Kremlin denied the allegations.
Following the incidents, Finland completely closed its land border with Russia toward the end of 2023.
Technical and Financial Details
The security fence stands approximately 4.5 metres, or around 15 feet, high and is equipped with modern cameras and sensors. Most of the structure has been built in southeastern Finland.
The project has cost approximately €356 million, while annual maintenance is expected to require an additional €2 million to €3 million.
Finnish authorities say that despite the rapid development of drone technology, physical barriers remain one of the most effective measures for controlling large groups of people and preventing illegal crossings. The fence could be extended further if necessary.
Current Situation and Future Plans
Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen has described the current situation along the border as “calm but tense,” warning that conditions could change rapidly and urging the country to remain prepared.
Finland has also called on the European Union to provide additional funding to strengthen border security in other eastern European countries.
The government has proposed extending the country’s border security legislation until the end of 2028. However, legal experts have warned that some provisions could conflict with human rights standards and European Union law.
Finland is not alone in reinforcing its eastern borders. Other NATO and EU member states bordering Russia and Belarus have also significantly strengthened their border security measures in recent years.
