A Chinese film and drama dubbing competition was held in Bangladesh in a festive atmosphere ahead of International Chinese Language Day 2026. Titled “In the Depth of Voice,” the event took place on Saturday morning at the auditorium of the Institute of Modern Languages (IML), University of Dhaka, where three teams secured first, second, and third positions among 11 finalists. Awards were presented by Li Shaopeng, Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, along with distinguished judges. Following a rigorous selection process, 11 teams advanced to the final round from a total of 24 participants representing the Confucius Institutes at the University of Dhaka, North South University, and Shanto-Mariam-Honghe. The competition—the first of its kind in Bangladesh—focused on appreciating the beauty, phonetics, and cultural depth of the Chinese language through film and television dubbing. Among the distinguished guests were Li Shaopeng; Professor Mohammad Absar Kamal, Director of the Institute of Modern Languages at DU and Bangladeshi Director of the Confucius Institute; Ma Xiaoyan, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at North South University; and Yang Hui, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at DU. Five Chinese judges were present at the competition. Winners, who received cash prizes and certificates, expressed enthusiasm and hoped such events would continue in the future.
Participants and attendees noted that the initiative offers a valuable opportunity for Bangladeshis to engage more closely with the Chinese language and film. Li Shaopeng said the competition provides a platform to better understand Chinese language, culture, and cinema, adding that it would encourage more young people in Bangladesh to learn Chinese. Yang Hui noted that April 20 marks International Chinese Language Day, and such initiatives are meaningful for fostering cultural exchange.
“It is a great opportunity to share values and culture between the two countries,” she said. Professor Mohammad Absar Kamal described the competition as a practical and effective way to promote Chinese language learning. At the event, five teams received Excellence Awards, three teams secured third place, two teams won second place, and one team claimed the top prize. Special awards were also given to trainers. Organizers expressed hope that the competition would boost Bangladeshi students’ interest in Chinese language and culture while strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
