Hong Kong – Dr. Fakhrul Islam Babu, founder of Dr. Muhammad Fakhrul Islam Foundation, China Bangladesh Friendship Center-CBFC, Asian Club Limited, Association of Naturalized Chinese Limited, Ethnic Minorities News Hong Kong, and a prominent advocate of cross-cultural dialogue, was named a 2025 Icon of Change at the Icons of Change Awards. The accolade recognizes his long-standing efforts in promoting international cooperation and inclusive governance throughout Asia. In addition to recognizing individual achievement, the Icons of Change Award is an international program that honors individuals and organizations for their significant and impactful contributions toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program highlights unsung heroes and prominent leaders who drive innovation, strengthen communities, and effect meaningful, lasting change across various fields, including business, media, education, and the civic sector.

The award emphasizes alignment with the UN SDGs, noting that honorees are recognized for work that aligns with the 17 global goals, including SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 4 (Quality Education). It also focuses on action, underscoring purposeful activity, transformative outcomes, and measurable community impact rather than titles or policy alone. The program further positions the laureates within a global community, providing a platform to connect a growing international network of changemakers and to foster collaboration beyond the ceremony itself. Recipients come from diverse sectors worldwide, encompassing corporate leaders, non-profit founders, media professionals, and public servants who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment. Ceremonies associated with Icons of Change are often held in conjunction with summits such as the Metro Manila SDG Action Summit to amplify United Nations themes and spur societal progress.

Born in Chandpur, Bangladesh, Dr. Fakhrul is a naturalized Chinese citizen based in Hong Kong. He established a multinational business focused on ethical trade and South-South cooperation, contributing to job creation and strengthening economic links between China, Bangladesh, India, and Hong Kong. Dr. Fakhrul holds leadership roles, including president of Asian Club Limited and head of the Hong Kong Association of Naturalized Chinese. The award cites his interpretation of Sun Yat-sen’s Three Principles ethnic harmony, public opinion, and livelihood-as a guiding framework for social cohesion and inclusive development. He has also been actively involved in public governance in Hong Kong, serving as a tutor for the National Security Law in the District, an area committee member, and a Care Team volunteer. He participated in the 2023 District Council elections as a candidate. Beyond business and government, Dr. Fakhrul has been involved with humanitarian and civic organizations. He has served in Rotary International in various capacities, including club president and director, and holds recognitions such as Paul Harris Fellow and Global Goodwill Ambassador. The Icons of Change Awards aim to recognize leadership that transcends borders, cultures, and sectors, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Dr. Fakhrul’s supporters describe him as a proponent of dialogue, dignity, and community service. At the same time, his critics highlight the challenges of aligning private sector leadership with public accountability in diverse regions. The Icons of Change 2025 presentation highlighted the award’s goal to recognize individuals who contribute to cross-cultural diplomacy, inclusive governance, and ethical entrepreneurship throughout Asia and beyond.
