Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed a regular press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday. During the briefing, a journalist raised a question regarding an emergency public meeting of the United Nations Security Council held on January 5, which focused on the United States’ military actions related to Venezuela.
In response, Mao Ning stated that the UN Security Council convened the emergency meeting to discuss the situation involving U.S. actions toward Venezuela. In his address, China’s representative firmly emphasized that military means are not a solution to problems, warning that the abuse of force will only lead to greater crises. China, she said, steadfastly supports the sovereignty, security, and legitimate rights of the Venezuelan government and its people.
Mao further noted that China strongly supports the efforts of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to uphold the region’s status as a zone of peace. China stands ready to work hand in hand with countries in the region and the international community to safeguard peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean, she added.
She stressed that China has always maintained that every country should respect the development path independently chosen by the people of other nations. All states, particularly major powers, must abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and set an example in doing so.
“No country has the right to act as the world’s police, and no country can claim to be the international judge,” Mao said.
China advocates a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, she explained. This approach calls for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, attention to legitimate security concerns of all parties, and the resolution of differences and disputes through dialogue and consultation by peaceful means.
Mao described this as China’s proposal for addressing global security challenges and achieving shared and collective security. China, she concluded, is willing to work with all countries to uphold the authority of international law, oppose the “law of the jungle,” reject interference in internal affairs, and safeguard global peace and stability.
