Chinese Premier Li Qiang Meets UN Secretary-General António Guterres

On September 24 in New York, Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

During the meeting, Li highlighted President Xi Jinping’s recent address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tianjin Summit, where Xi presented China’s Global Governance Initiative, offering Chinese insights and solutions to strengthen and advance global governance. Li extended an invitation to the Secretary-General to join the summit and emphasized that President Xi had engaged in in-depth discussions with him.

Li stated that China is eager to enhance communication and coordination with the UN and relevant parties, implement the Global Governance Initiative, build a fairer and more equitable global governance system, and contribute further to global peace and development.

He noted that over the past 80 years, the UN has played a vital role in maintaining peace and security, promoting economic and social development, and protecting human rights. China remains committed to upholding the UN’s authority and status, encouraging all countries to use the UN platform to strengthen dialogue, cooperation, and coordinated action. Li expressed concern that unilateral and protectionist measures are harming the global economy and significantly hindering the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

He urged the international community, particularly the Global South, to raise stronger voices for justice, collectively resist bullying behaviors, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of all nations. China continues to integrate its development with global progress, promote high-level openness, share development opportunities with other countries, and act as a stabilizing and driving force for the global economy. Li also expressed hope that the UN will play a greater role in addressing climate change, AI governance, and other global challenges through enhanced coordination.

Li expressed gratitude to Secretary-General Guterres for his support of President Xi’s key video address at the UN Climate Change Summit. He noted that Xi’s proposed Global Governance Initiative is rich in content, closely aligned with the UN’s enduring commitments, and effectively responds to the international community’s call for reform and improvement of global governance. China sees itself as a strong pillar of the UN, committed to strengthening cooperation, upholding multilateralism, safeguarding UN charters and international justice, promoting global development, advancing governance reforms, expanding representation of the Global South, and protecting the common interests of the international community.
